Pass-by-reference means to pass the reference of an argument in the calling function to the corresponding formal parameter of the called function. The called function can modify the value of the argument by using its reference passed in. The following example shows how arguments are passed by reference.
They are synonymous. The term call-by-value means exactly the same as pass-by-value. However, I prefer the pass-by-value form, as it's the parameter that is passed that it refers to. A call can have parameters that are passed by value as well as parameters passed by reference.
By definition, pass by value means you are making a copy in memory of the actual parameter's value that is passed in, a copy of the contents of the actual parameter. Use pass by value when when you are only "using" the parameter for some computation, not changing it for the client program.
While calling a function, we pass values of variables to it. Such functions are known as “Call By Values”. While calling a function, instead of passing the values of variables, we pass address of variables(location of variables) to the function known as “Call By References.

Variable setting in Dreamweaver template in SDL Tridion
We use RenderComponentPresentation
(on Tridion 2009) to render internal and external links so that the code base is in only one Dreamweaver template. It would be helpful if we could pass through an optional CSS Class to use when rendering the link.
Any ideas how this could be done?
