How can I style a Select from Material UI with styled components?

I'm trying

export const StyledAppSelect = styled(Select)`
  &:before {
    border-color: white;
  }

  &:after {
    border-color: white;
  }
  color: white;
`

But that doesn't seem to change the font color or the border color. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

In order to know how to style it - you first need to check what HTML is actually generated for that component. Because some styles you can apply to the top level <div> and some styles you might need to apply to nested elements.

Here is an example:

import Select from '@material-ui/core/Select';

// width or color can be set on top level
// but to get styled border you need to style nested div
const StyledSelect = styled(Select)`
  width: 100px;
  color: red;
  & > div {
    border: 2px solid green;
  }
`;
....
....
// somewhere in where you need to render it
<StyledSelect>
  <MenuItem value={10}>Ten</MenuItem>
  <MenuItem value={20}>Twenty</MenuItem>
  <MenuItem value={30}>Thirty</MenuItem>
</StyledSelect>

And here is how it can look like (but I haven't changed icon or :hover etc. That is why what you can see on the picture is a bit weird):

enter image description here

To style icon you can add this:

& > svg {
    color: red;
}

Or you can change input's bottom border:

// yeah, sometimes it's not that easy to override frameworks styles :)
// so, to figure out what to override you need to check what framework generates for you
// e.g. this ":hover:not(.Mui-disabled):before" is how Material adds
// bottom border when you hover input (the dark line on the img I attached above), so that's the way how we can override it
&:hover:not(.Mui-disabled):before {
    border-bottom: 2px solid yellow;
}

Hope you get the idea :)
