Double hyphen precedes options when they are written in full, , while single hyphen precedes options when they are written in short form. For example ls --all --l , can be shortened to ls -al . As it is seen, not all options have their single letter equivalents, although more used ones usually do.

What Does It Do? A double-dash in a shell command signals the end of options and disables further option processing. Let's see this in action using the grep command. This command outputs all occurrences of the string hello from the specified file.
A single dash can be followed by any number of single-character flags, while a double dash can be followed only by a single, multi-character option. For example, if you want a listing using the ls command, and you want to include the file sizes, you can specify either of these options: $ ls --size $ ls -s.
Does anyone know what is the main difference between specifying an argparse agument with a single dash -r and a double dash --r?
I came across this Julia language argparse which classifies them as short and long but doesn't say exactly why you would use one over the other.
